Pros:  Nicer look, IS works, great images, seems more robust than previous G-Series

Cons:  No BP-512 support! No 28mm wide angle? No RAW?? No Swivel screen?? Minimum Aperture increased! This camera is a great advanced P&S for those who never had a G-Series before. It's a beautiful camera to hold and use, and the pictures are great. IS is a welcome addition and natural progression. The camera feels pretty solid and built well as always.

However, if you are a G-Series owner wishing to upgrade, you'll find the changes to be minimal, as well as frustrating.

For example, the fact it no longer supports the BP-51x series batteries is a big letdown if you wish to use this alongside your non-1 series Canon DSLR. It was so convenient to only use one style charger and battery type, but now you need two.

Then talk about what you MISS: No RAW, and no swivel screen...stuff which made the G-Series great. a BIG letdown IMHO.

The minimum aperture has increased...which would have been ok had the lens gone wider. But you still have 35mm at the widest setting. This camera could have been great had it had at least a 28mm.

At this price-level, these ommisions really make you think twice about upgrading. In several of these examples, the previous G-Series cameras are superior.

When it comes down to it, if you are a new user of G-Series Canons, the G7 is quite nice. But not nice enough to sway any current owners to upgrade IMHO.

Pros:  Great color, build quality, ease of use, image stabilizer, built in ND filter, superb view screen

Cons:  average battery life at best I think this is finally an improvement over prior G series models. It is smaller, lighter, better sensor, faster performance and finally lost that stupid looking touristy flippy screen thing. Instead there is a screen with image so clear you can actually manually focus with precision. You may not get this camera in a tight pocket on your jeans but you'll get it in a cargo pocket, jacket pocket, or carry it around your neck with ease (because it's lighter and smaller).Go look at Flickr's camera finder page and see what people are doing with this camera in terms of image quality! It's about time they dumped RAW image capability as the waste of space it was, maybe it will force so-called "advanced" users to use the camera before they hit the button instead of mindlessly clicking away thinking they can make it good later on. Sorry, if it isn't a good picture out of the camera it isn't a good picture. Instead of RAw you get a built in neutral density filter which is a truly useful feature as it functionally gives you two or three stops down, as does the image stabilizer so actually this camera will take any shot the G6 would take. It just doesn't need to have a larger aperature to do it.

Great for users who can use the manual control features but just as good with its auto and scene modes. Anyone can take a very good picture with it and if you want to learn to do better than just good it will take you there.

Superb pictures, features galore, turns on very quickly, shutter lag when pre-focussed is minimal. Flash is better than most P&S flashes and hey, it has a hotshoe if you need more. All the controls are at your fingertips and once you learn them it is a very fast performing camera. also very quiet once you turn off all the noise making bits.

If you want the best P&S out right now this is it. At least in my opinion.

Finally a good P&S camera to be proud of!

Pros:  great pictures & movie mode - easy to use

Cons:  Good size, but wish it was small as the SD800 Great camera and takes great video with sound.. I have done my homework and this thing ROCKS! There is no other P&S that has much too offer vs Canon G7. It is a bit expensive, but you get what you pay for.

The thing that gets me mad are the other reviews that complain that the camera doesn't have tilt screen or raw mode.... Who cares???? Have you seen the tilt screen screen on the other G Models? Yeah you can rotate it, but picture quality looks bad. On the other hand the G7 has a wonderful display for pictures & video. If your thing is RAW mode... Then i dont recommend this camera or any other P&S.. Get a DSLR if you need to go to that level... Yeah DSLR are great i have one that i hardly use, because carrying that is a pain in the rear. Too heavy and bulky.

Overall, i am very pleased with my G7!

Peace!!!

Pros:  XGA Video and Easy Access to Functions

Cons:  Not a Compact Camera, IS Overrated Pro: Great pictures and videos. The only camera that offers XGA video aside from Canon SD900 (no Image Stabilizer).
Love the dial on the camera to easily access different scenes and controls such as manual focus.
Low light picture and video are better than previous models.

Con: Weights heavier than a can of soda.
Image Stabilizer is not what I expected. I was thinking that all shots will be stablize. I took some normal shot with some shaking and it still comes out blury unless you have the flash on. However, I did get a clear shot when I zoom to the max and took a picture of a sign. It has to be outdoor with good lighting.

Conclusion: I do recommend buying the G7. If Canon can have IS on the SD900, I would buy the SD900 instead due to it's size and weight. I think Canon did this on purpose to sell both cameras. Also, Canon reliablity is the best. All my old Canons still works.

Pros:  very clear pictures.

Cons:  Dont know of any yet. I have been shopping around for a good digital camera for sometime now. I think I have finally found the one for me. I do have a canon 20D and love it also. I wanted something that would take pictures with the quality of the dslr camera but half the size. This one comes very close. I am in no way a pro. photographer but I love to take clear pictures. All in all I have not had this camera long, but I think I am going to be very happy with it.

Pros:  Professional looks, great pictures, sturdy build, superb options, fully featured

Cons:  Some will miss not having raw files The G7 is one of the definitive compact cameras of the moment. It has a sturdy metal construction with impressive build quality and a reassuring weightiness. It looks like a serious camera and feels serious too. The images it produces are stunning for its size.
This camera is all about giving the owner maximum control over the pictures. From full manual control over exposure right up to the most programmed of point and shoot modes, this camera has it covered. It also has a fine range of different settings for various types of photo. These range from the useful (portraits, night shots and children with animals) through to the rarely used (aquarium photography or fireworks anyone?).
You have a separate ISO dial to dial in your own values, and plenty of other controls to make the perfect composition.
The camera also features image stabilisation and automatic face recognition to make sure that all the faces in a shot are in focus.
You have a traditional viewfinder as well as a large, clear screen to frame your pictures with. You can add gridlines to the digital screen to help frame your portraits.
The lens has a six times optical zoom and a very usable digital zoom too. 10 million megapixels produce crisply detailed pictures. Macro mode allows you to focus as close as 1 centimetre away from the subject.
There are very few downsides to this camera. The omission of raw format ability is surprising given the fact that this camera is such a professional little beast, and the shutter button and zoom ring are very small and fiddly for my outsized hands.
My G7 sits happily alongside my canon EOS 5d digital SLR, and I love it to bits. You will not regret purchasing this camera.

Pros:  Now it fits into pants pocket. Has better bright light LCD viewing. Controls are laid out in an easy to understand manner.

Cons:  May be priced a bit too high to realize a following that will inspire Canon to produce the G8. The G7 lens retracts flush with the camera body making this an excellent travel camera. Previous G series cameras since the G1 (I have owned the G1,G3, and S3 IS) had really gotten bulky and were a hassle to carry in the pocket so they were often left behind in the hotel room.
Most of my travel photography takes place outside and in the sunshine. The newer model cameras like the S3 IS have flip out screens that do not show well in bright outdoor sunlight. I found it hard to compose a good photo because of this. Canon has obviously noticed this problem and has opted for the best choice in this larger, brighter LCD screen.
Okay, if you take most of your pictures of ants or other things that stay low to the ground you may miss the rotating flip LCD screen...But I always found my pictures off square when using the flip screen. Once I got the S3 IS I could not even use the flip screen outdoors due to the washed out screen.
Sometimes change is for the best....

Pros:  Great camera EXCEPT....

Cons:  No Vari-Angle LCD? Come on Canon...You gotta be kidding me... I guess if you are a first time G series buyer. it will seem like a great little camera...But if you've had one before, like me, you will be shocked that one of the VERY best features, the vari angle LCD, is missing. This feature was WONDERFUL for taking close-to-the-ground shots...Without it, you need to get on your belly like the days of old....I have a hard time 'highly' recommending this camera for that very reason....

Pros:  Exelent rangfinder

Cons:  Abit noise at high Iso The G7 is an Exelent all range camera.
With super Image qalitie.
in good light, however at the long end of the zoom
it is a bit slow lens:)F/3.5 would be better.
at only 6X zoom.

Be awhere canon drop the raw from the point and shoot camera's,and the G7 is one of them.
Not thad I used alot of raw,but somtimes it is better when you have raw then just Jpg.

The G7 is compact, and give Exelent pictures in about every situation.
The G7 is an exelent movie camera, but you have only digital zoom.
The IS is verry good in lower light, and the manuel settings, are as good as an Dslr,
you can change everything,
I found thad this camera give me the best Image qalitie of all the camera's I have ,and have owned.
Exept the D70s is better, but then we talking about an camera cost 3times the G7

It is verry portable camera, and exelent if you like to use them on vacations.

Pros:  good quality images, easy to use better features

Cons:  no flip screen, really bad grip, poor quality material I agree with all the other people about image, zoom, aperature etc. But the problem i had with the first G7 was a humming noise that was comming out from the speaker. It could be the MIC or a small fan inside the camera to keep it cool. It only comes when use for about 15 min . You could here it if u make a movie and watch it on the computer. Other wise the flip screeen and grip could have been brought from the older G6 would be good to. An Execellent camera with exceptional features.
