Intel BX80557E6600 Processor / Upgrade

Product Description

PC users are running multiple, intense software applications simultaneously, increasing demand on hardware resources. In the office, PC usage has changed from data entry and word processing to e-Commerce, online collaboration and an ever-increasing need for continual security and virus protection. In the home, interests have shifted from low-bandwidth photos and Internet surfing to downloading and viewing high definition videos, as well as advanced photo and video editing. The Intel Core 2 Duo processor was developed to meet all these demands.

Built on the innovative Intel Core microarchitecture, the Intel Core 2 Duo desktop processor delivers revolutionary dual-core performance and breakthrough processor energy efficiency. With Intel Wide Dynamic Execution, Intel Smart Memory Access, Intel Advanced Smart Cache and Intel Digital Media Boost, this new processor is designed to do more in less time. Additional features to support enhanced security, virtualization, and 64-bit computing make the Intel Core 2 Duo the most impressive new processor developed for an increasingly multimedia-centered, high-definition world.

Design changes in the Intel Core 2 Duo processors that improve performance also increase processor energy efficiency by operating at lower frequencies that require less power to run. Intel Intelligent Power Capability optimizes energy usage of the processor cores by turning on computing functions only when needed. This more energy-efficient processor supports smaller, more capable, and quieter desktop PC to conserve critical power resources.

Pros:  Fast, Dual Core, Great for overclockers

Cons:  Not much unless you have to talk to tech suport Make sure your motherboard is compatible with the new chip. It is the best bang for your buck. I have it overclocked to 2.9 on the stock heatsink and stable at 43C idle and 53C load.

Pros:  Good performance with Win2003 or WinXP

Cons:  You need to do your homework: make sure your motherboard, power supply, and processor cooling fan are compatible. My review is about the processor, not the price. Fry's in Palo Alto, CA had low-priced processor/motherboard combo deals using a dual core processor, but I have had problems with ECS mobos in the past (they last only about a year and then fail even when using a standard configuration, compatibility issues or finding drivers). I choose to pay a little more and buy my components separately: 2GHz dual-core processor, Intel DB33FB mobo, 2Gb 800MHz DDR2 ram, and a 600W power supply at Fry's. I bought a 160Gb SATA hard drive and a DVD/CD SATA (burner) drive separately online (at the time that Fry's store did not have a good stock of SATA drives). I configured it as a multi-boot PC (Windows: XP, 2003 server; Linux: Granular, Mint, Kiwi, PC/OS, AntiX, and Puppy (I like to use different OS's). My PC is up and on 24hr/day. I have used this configuration for over a year with good performance and reliability.
