NEC ND 3550A DVD Burner

Product Description

NEC now introduces the ND-3550A that already complies with the new standard, meaning that all components are lead-free.

ND-3550A is NEC's third model in the market can write both DVD-R (DL) and DVD+R (DL) in dual layers. With ND-3550A it is now possible for rewritable RW discs to be burned with the highest speed so far in the market, 8x for DVD +RW and 6x for DVD-RW respectively. The speed of writing with dual layers is now 8x for +R DL.

An amazing 8.5 GB can be stored on a dual-layer disc. The large storage capacity makes the writer suitable for users who wish to quickly and simply store films, music and other volumes of data in a flexible way. A one-hour DVD video can be recorded in six minutes with the ND-3550A, irrespective of the DVD format. NEC also implemented its own developed buffer under run error prevention technology.

The ND-3550 takes advantage of an enhanced version of NEC's own AOPC technology (Active Optimum Power control), which adjusts the laser effect in real time so as to achieve optimal readability. The ND-3550A is backwards compatible and writes on CD-R at a maximum speed of 48x.

Pros:  good quality burning even with cheap media.

Cons:  some incompatibilty problems with some DVD MID codes, questionable scanning capabilities, and some large error spikes with Verbatim 16X DVD-R media. i had this drive for long enough now... it has many cons, including some problems with specific MID codes, like DVD-Rs with codes from LONGTEN001, SKC Co. Ltd. and AN31 [SAST Digital Optical Discs Co.,Ltd.]..

and having some other questionable scanning abilities, it shows a large amount of PIEs than the 3540A used to show... and too far beyond the "average" scanning limit.. but still convinient in PIF scanning...

CD writing speed and quality are ok...

error correction for the drive is not that great, the BenQ DW-1640 wins over this one... many damaged DVD's or scratchy Audio CDs fail to read without errors... unlike the BenQ or Lite-On readers...

but for writing DVDs, one GRAND problem is an Ugly spike that shows ALWAYS while writing on Verbatim's 16X DVD-Rs, eventhough the disc is still readable with no real problems, but still, the spike leaves an unansewred question about the durability of the disc anyway...

this drive is better for use with low quality/cheap media, either DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW... and it has a great quality when used on some Low quality DVD-RWs...

in overall... the drive is OK... it has some problems... but it's an ok/average burner...
