Intel Entry Storage System SS4000-E

Product Description

Organizations today are inundated with data. Storing existing applications such as e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations can be cumbersome. Legal requirements for file retention, the need for disaster recovery planning, multi-media applications, file sharing, digital photography, and customer data adds to the influx of data, resulting in an increased need for storage.

The Intel Entry Storage System SS4000-E is an intelligent network storage solution for small office, medium office, and home network environments. Costing less than big file servers, the SS4000-E manages shared files by user names or groups, and features a NAS system with system backup, remote boot, and system recovery.

The SS4000-E can connect to a Gigabit Ethernet network and support up to four Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) hard disks. This high performance solution is ideal for protecting valuable data and quickly restoring from a backup. With a convenient Web interface, the SS4000-E provides security by limiting access to shared folders by user or group level authentication. Complete and advanced data protection is provided through support for RAID Levels 10, 5 and 1.

The client backup and recovery application is a powerful, centralized function providing entire system backup and recovery for clients running Windows operating systems. Should there be a hard disk failure in the client, your critical data can be recovered.

Pros:  Small Case

Cons:  Everything Else This system was shipped way before its time. The system kerneal has so many bugs I'm shocked that Intel shipped it.

I loaded the system with a Tera Byte of storage and the system took an INCREDIBLE 24+ hours to initalize. All durring this time the system appeared to be ready but kept failing due to timeouts.

Once I had the system running the next day It failed and put one drive off line. It took another 24+ hours to reset the system.

The system is incompatible with Veritas BackUp Exec software and Veritas states it does not support Samba kernals. (Thats another story) To try and solve this I turned on the Active Directory feature in the Intel software. HOWEVER I could not get it to work. I called Intel Tech support and their reply was "It Works for Us." And that was the only supprot they offered. I had to sniffer the problem myself. It turns out that the AD feature syncs off the time clock for Kerbos and Intel failed to put support for Daylight saving time in. Time has been one of the most debugged routines since Y2k. What Jr programer at intel doesn't know that. I had to set the time off by 1 hour to get the system to work. Intels response was after October 28th the prblem will go away. (Yea brilliant Intel).

There are 3 more problems I can discuss but this system limits my input. Incase you think this is just one broken box.... I brought 2 and they both have the same issues. Don't buy this peice of junk.
