Pros:  Windows Mobile 5,intel 2700G with 16mb of ram video,256mb memory, cf and sd card slots wi-fi,bluetooth

Cons:  windows mobile 5 has some issues, substantial learning curve, needs "tweaks" right out of the box So far I have really enjoyed this little computer. Right out of the box I had to perform a "server trick" to keep ActiveSync from turning on all the time and basically wreaking havoc with the OS. I ended up installing a lot of SBSH software like Pocketbreeze and PocketWeather which work great. I have not installed a program to close out features like Magic Button or VBar, as I can get along with the supplied Handy Switcher. I also installed Pocket Informant which is a fantastic PIM. I also bough Flex Wallet from the same company which allows you to store all you sensitive data (bank account numbers, passwords, etc) via 128-bit encryption. The Axim has performed flawlessly with all these programs. I definitely recommend this product if you are not afraid to get into the machine and mess around with the programming.

Pros:  Games

Cons:  married to microsoft, huge software issue, buggy I bought this product on 12/7/2005. When I installed the setup software on my PC, the setup RECOMMENDED that I update from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2002. I thought, sure, if that makes the sync easier. After the "update", I logged into Outlook 2002, and ALL my data was gone: contacts, calendar, journal entries, to-do list and email archives--5 years worth of data was gone. I am a CPA, this data is vital to me.

When I went to on-line chat with a Dell Tech Support person, his or her English was terrible, and they informed me that 'sorry, you should have made a backup first'. I told them that the Setup never advised me of this, nor did it prompt me "Are you sure you want to do this", ie. are you sure you want to delete your data. I was furious.

Fortunately, I back up my PC every week, but I had never restored from backup, let alone restore just one directory. The Alohoabob backup software worked seamlessly, otherwise this event would have been critical.

Then I learned that Dell shipped me the Axim with an outdated ROM version. Therefore, before I could even use this thing I would need to upgrade the ROM, which, according to various forum entries, was not an easy task.

So the whole thing went back.

Pros:  Great screen, feature full, good price

Cons:  Buggy, no toolbars I love the screen on this. Pictures look amazing on it. Especially that I can take pictures on my camera and just put the SD card in and look at them right away.

I have dropped it several times on tile floors and it still works fine.

I had to put half a business card behind the batttery door to keep it from thinking the door is open and turning off automatically.

I can't leave an SD card in it as it won't turn on and would require a soft reboot (there is a work around available).

I love having all my tasks in one spot along with the calendar.

The microphone and speaker are good considering the size!

I love it, I don't use my laptop nearly as much now. ...

Pros:  First Windows Mobile 5.0 handheld. Excellent value for money.

Cons:  Slower at some office tasks than pre-WM5 handhelds. Battery life still isn't great The X51v looks exactly like its predecessor, and most of its hardware is the same, too: a top-of-the-line 624-MHz Intel PXA270 processor, Intel's 2700G 3D graphics accelerator, a VGA screen, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Secure Digital and CompactFlash expansion slots.

Usable Flash memory storage on the X50v was limited to 128MB, but the X51v offers a maximum of 256MB. In addition, the X51v includes a massive software bundle of games and applications: nine games, including full versions of 3D mini-golf and car-rally games, as well as demos of other games. Other interesting bundled applications include a full version of the Battery Pack Lite utility toolbar and demos of Resco's File Explorer utility, SPB Finance, and Westtek's ClearVue document-reading suite.

The X51v has the same excellent gaming performance, sharp screen, and networking capabilities as its predecessor. Its built-in Wi-Fi networking works fine and now supports WPA security, though it's a little awkward to set up. Bluetooth is definitely for syncing, not for audio/video transmission or even file transfer.

Changes in performance stem from both OS and hardware changes. Windows Mobile 5.0 marks a dramatic change in how Pocket PCs address memory. Formerly, Pocket PCs split their RAM between space used to run programs and space used to store files. Flash memory served as a backup for larger or less frequently used files. This makes for a fast, responsive system, but takes its toll in battery life, as RAM needs a continuous trickle of energy to keep its data intact. Pocket PC owners therefore found (and continue to find) that once their battery ran out of juice, all their data and programs stored in RAM evaporated.

Pros:  Overall, it's wonderful

Cons:  It's slow to move information to the Flash memory Overall, this is a wonderful reader, recorder, datebook, etc. It's clear, easy to use and lightweight. This is a great way to carry all of your textbooks as a backup in a .pdf, .txt, .rff, or Microsoft reader format. If possible, always buy the Microsoft reader format - it allows you to bookmark, highlight, make notes and more on any page. For the student, it's so convientent and comfortable to read. If you can buy the small external fold-up keyboard or the virtual keyboard, this little pda can be better than your laptop for writing papers on your lap in the park or at the library. Just e-mail it to yourself or your teacher when you're done.

The only drawback is when you wish to backup your pda or add new files like books, textbooks, mp3, etc. to the Flash card that this pda seems ssssooooooo slow. However, if you purchase a card reader ($19 - $40) this process is eleminated.

The only other complant that I have is one that I have for most pda's. Why don't they just make ones that have a large hard drive (60GB - 120GB) and usb 2.0? I really wish someone would make a pda with the power of an iPod. It would be wonderful to have a backup drive that I could attach quickly to my computer and then take it with me and use it to read, record, listen to music, etc. All of the pda's are a little bigger than the iPod - I don't understand why adding a decent hard drive is an issue. However, the Dell X51v is as close to perfect as I can get until that time.

Pros:  WiFi, Bluetooth, Supports both SD and CF memory cards, Windows Mobile 2005 doesn't lose your data

Cons:  Dell doesn't have the best support I originally purchased the Axim x50v, but had so many problems with Windows Mobile 2005 that Dell finally replaced it with a refurbished x51v. No more problems. The device is solid and have not had any problems with Windows Mobile 2005. I use Yahoo! Go to retrieve all my emails to the device, download podcasts/netcasts using SmartRss and also use the Dell GPS package. I couldn't be happier with the performance and features. I can usually go a day on one charge using the device on and off, and can go about 4 hours of continuous use. An extra battery gets me through the long flights.
