Garmin StreetPilot c340 GPS Receiver

Product Description

The StreetPilot c340 provides in-car navigation that is simple for anyone to use directly out of the box. After selecting a destination from the user-friendly touch screen interface, Garmin's text-to-speech feature tells users the name of the street, when to turn, and in what direction. If you miss your turn, the c340 automatically calculates a new route to the destination.

Notification of traffic delays is a c340 option that lets drivers see congested areas via a color-coded map. This feature lets users avoid traffic by simply pushing a button that will calculate a new route. This traffic awareness is made possible via the new Garmin GTM 10 FM TMC receiver that connects to selected Garmin street navigation products. The GTM 10 receives digital data from specific FM broadcast stations in select major metro areas throughout the United States and Europe.

Garmin has also added the ability for customers to augment the preloaded maps with custom POI's from industry-standard CSV files, such as school zones and safety cameras. In addition, a proximity alert feature is included to optionally notify the driver of upcoming custom POI's. The StreetPilot c340 comes preloaded with highly detailed City Select NT street data of the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The database features nearly six million points of interest - including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions.

The StreetPilot c340 joins Garmin's growing line of automotive GPS navigators. It has a bright, 3.5-inch diagonal, TFT display with touchscreen; dual integrated speakers for high-quality voice prompts; and an internal lithium-ion battery for out-of-car route planning.

The StreetPilot c-series boasts distinctive and sleek styling - the units' only buttons are a rotary volume knob and an on/off switch. The device is secured by a suction-mount cradle that fastens to the windshield, for easy portability between vehicles.

Pros:  Accuracy and ease of use.

Cons:  Did't see any yet... I talked to a lot of people and read a lot of things before buying a GPS 3 months ago. It was worth spending over $500 for the Garmin C340. I have not had any problems. The maps are accurate and even though I'm not using an external antenna I have only lost the satellite signal when driving in heave wooded farm area.

Pros:  Everything

Cons:  None After lots of reading and research from Garmin C330 and TomTom One, I decided to get the Garmin C340. I bought it at Bestbuy, MN for $500 out the door. I figure these thing use to run $800-$1000 a couple years ago, so $500 is still a great deal and now more improve.

It comes with your normal stuff like suction mount, usb cords for connection to the computer, preloaded with the most up to date version of North American NT Map, software CD, car 12-24 volt adapter. Support: Garmin will allow one FREE map download per year for map updates.

This is what I like about the C340 over the rest:

One, the C340 is out of the box and working in just 5 minutes. Touch screen operation is fantastic.

Two, it has a SD card slot so you can save all your routes or/and preplan your routes then save them on to the card and not have to use the unit

Works right out of the box.

Pros:  easy to set up, compact, easy navigation of display.

Cons:  glare on the display during sunny days, price, charging in vehicle is via mounting. I bought a Garmin C340 in July 2006 after previously having used a loaned Garmin 2610. Installation was quick, and I had the unit ready to roll to my next destination within a matter of minutes.

All the controls on this particular unit are very easy to use and navigation of the items displayed on the screen is quick and efficient.

You can find addresses for locations all over the map, and this little gadget will get you there with pinpoint accuracy..I have taken it on a cross country trip (East to West) and it did not get lost once.

Out of all the places I've had this GPS point me towards, it has been right on the money, no outdated addresses, phone #'s, etc., etc.

Now, to the question of the unit acquiring satellites..it is relatively quick to catch onto the 12 satellites roaming the sky at any one point, so you'll have a good shot at being on the road within 2,3 minutes of starting the unit.

However, there will be times when the unit will lose that link w the satellites - in tunnels, while driving/walking thru a heavily forested areas, in or around buildings (skyscrapers or not).

Even though it wasn't made to be taken on walks, or day long hikes, during the time I used it while on its own battery power, the Garmin C340 performed flawlessly. I have not tried to run the battery out of power, thus I do not know what the actual time it can last without a charge is.

Charging the unit can be done in a few ways:

1) If you're on the road, you can have the Garmin charge in the supplied vehicle charging set up, though you have to have the unit mounted on the windshield/dash in order to have the charge cable give it juice..not a big deal, so I can live w that.

2) Have a computer handy...? Install the software on your PC/Mac and attach the USB cable included in the box, and watch it charge up..while you type in your next destination's address.

3) I haven't tried this, but it is possible to also charge it by attaching the USB cable to one of the Playstation 3's USB ports.

If you like compact, right on the money directions, traffic updates (w a subscription),a detour capability, the chance to hear your location's name being pronounced in several (20) languages, and more..then the Garmin C340 is the one you'll be looking to have at your side for a good while to come.

Great unit--Compared to Magellan Maestro 3140

Pros:  Ease of use, readable maps, intuitive interface

Cons:  Size, slow signal acquisition (compared w/Magellan 3140), no bluetooth (if you need that...) I bought the C340 and used it for a few months until it was stolen from my car. I decided to try something different, so I bought a Magellan Maestro 3140. Here are some random thoughts if you are interested:

-Compared to the Magellan, the c340 takes forever to acquire the signal--sometimes the Magellan comes on connected to a satellite(s). The Magellan will often work inside a building, where the Garmin won't.
(However, this isn't a huge problem because the Garmin works fine after it connects--sometime it connects in 20 seconds, occasionally you wait up to 2 minutes.)

-The Magellan seems a little more speedy recalculating routes.

-The Garmin's menus make much more sense, overall I would say it is easier to use than the Magellan.

-Both produce enough volume and have nice bright screens

-Because its smaller and flatter, the Magellan is easier to take with you (which I definitely recommend--I left my Garmin in the car and someone swiped it)

-The suction cup mount on the Magellan is smaller and less stable than the Garmin's. The unit never fell off the window with the Garmin, the Magellan did a few times.

-The Garmin has a few different types of voices that you can select, the Magellan has one. Both have excellent text-to-speech.

-The Magellan seems to give a few more vocal directions than the Garmin. The Magellan also has a split screen view, which is neat--you can see the turn on one side of the screen and the live view on the other.

-The AAA toubook in the Magellan is a nice feature (not in the c340)

Overall, I would recommend the Garmin by a small margin, just because its a bit easier to use.

Good luck in your search!

Pros:  Ease of use, quick signal acquisition

Cons:  None When you buy something that works out of the box without reading the user manual or even quick start guide, you know that you have bought a best-seller. Garmin c340 is no exception. Recently, I bought a unit just before my business trip. Without any time for reading the quick start guide, I took the compact c340 with me to the destination airport and started using it right away in my rental car. And it worked like a charm, giving quick and accurate directions to my meeting place and other locations in the city that I'd never been to before.

After coming back from the trip I had more time to test it further and here is what I found:

- Acquisition of satellite signal is within 5s. It works even inside my house. This is amazing, I never expected that. Recalculating of route after a wrong turn is also very fast, within a few seconds.

- Directions and street names are very clearly announced. You can select different accents and languages.

- Rich selection of points of interest. Looking for an Italian restaurant near you? The unit gives you a list of them within several miles completed with phone numbers.

The only time that the unit failed my test of accuracy was when I deliberately made an early turn into a small road about 50ft and parallel to the routed highway, then the unit got confused and continued to give direction as if I was on the highway. It could be that the signal was weak in that area of tall trees and the navigation algorithm was making a wrong guess. However, it is always accurate when I follow the calculated route.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the purchase. It is very affordable and performs better than I expected for a navigator in its price range.

Pros:  Nice display

Cons:  Numerous The GPS was super slow in acquiring satellite. Voice prompt would come AFTER the street to be turned on--Did not believe that I should have to watch the map constantly. Unit was slow in recalculating and sometimes did not recalculate at all, but continued to tell me the route it wanted me to take miles back.
Tech support was very nice, but resetting the unit, etc. didn't solve the problems.
Fortunately, I had purchased this unit at Costco and was able to return it.
I now have the c550 and so far, it's GREAT.

Pros:  Easy to use; recalculates route accurately

Cons:  Minor - can't change voice I bought the Tom Tom and returned it after using it once. It was not user friendly and it had a mind of its own. The Garmin is very simple to use and has been extremely accurate. I am confident that I can get to where I need to go for the first time without getting lost!
