Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54GC
|
|
Product Description
The Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router is really three devices in one small box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. Once your computers are connected to the Router and the Internet, they can communicate with each other too, sharing a printer, digital music, picture and document files, and multi-player or on-line games. To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Broadband Router can encode all wireless transmissions with WEP or industrial-strength WPA Personal encryption. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. And the tiny form factor fits any home or desktop. With the Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Cons:
Can't access Yahoo Mail. This is a great looking wireless router and as a longtime Linksys fan, thought it would be the perfect upgrade from my Linksys B router. Unfortunately I was wrong. This router did not work with Yahoo Mail from 3 seperate PC's. I spent over 4+ hours on the phone with 1st & 2nd level support and uploaded endless firmware upgrades ... but we couldn't get this unit to work correctly. Before this endevour I never even knew what an MTU was but sure do now. They even shipped me a replacement unit (which I had to pay for return shipping) and the same problem. How did I solve my problem? I went out and bought a $29 (after rebate) Netgear G router. It worked right out of the box and I can now ready my yahoo mail. Sorry Linksys.

Cons:
The WRT54GC won't self install with the CD If you have 2 hours to waste and want to make a couple of phone calls to India, this is the product for you. During installtion with CD provided, it will not automatically read your IP, Gateway and other non-understandable numbers that a non-expert doesn';t understand in the first place. I wound up taking it back to the store and paying $10 more for the WRT54G (non-compact) in hopes it would load up OK. It didn't!!!!! Same thing,...it wanted me to put in numbers manually. Forget it!!!!!!!!!
