Sid Meier's Civilization IV PC Game

Product Description

From humble beginnings as a prehistoric tribe of hunters and gatherers, to a farflung future of extraterrestrial colonization, players lead their people to dominate Earth and beyond in this eraspanning game of empirebuilding. A true living legend of computer game design, Sid Meier invites strategists to conquer the world all over again, in this fourth edition in the influential Civilization series.

Many of the most significant additions to this version of Civilization involve customization. The tech tree remains the roadmap to scientific and industrial advancement, but there is now more than one path to milestone discoveries. The religion model offers more customization as well, and players can now better use the power of faith to spread their culture, or they can choose to have no state religion at all, boosting scientific endeavors.

Combat has been enhanced in Civ IV, to give more individuality to veteran units and to balance away occasional historical mismatches sometimes noticed in earlier editions of Civ. More than one leader character is available for many of the traditional opponent nations, and the game will play differently depending on who is in charge of rival empires. In all, Civilization IV is designed to offer players a game world of unprecedented sophistication and realism, whether they aim to win it through warfare or culture. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide

Civ IV -- buggy, slow and the same old story

Pros:  Addicting play (if you haven't played it before)

Cons:  Crash bugs, very slow performance near endgame Just another "me too" review. This is one of the few games that I disliked enough to take back.

1. I love the original Civ. But here we are at Civ IV and *nothing substantial has been improved*. There

Pros:  Replay Value, Extremely Fun

Cons:  A very system intensive game Civilization games have a reputation for having addictive gameplay, for being epic in scale, and for having enormous replay value. This incarnation is no different, with the variety of cultures to choose from (18) and subcultures for several civilizations (for example America can be led by George Washington or FDR) and a new tech tree and governmental "Civics" system, this version of Civilization goes beyond the already stellar benchmarks set by previous Civ games. With the new civics system you can play as a country of pacifists, an environmentally friendly Police State, with freedom of speech, and mercentalism as the economic system--all at once; and then, the next time you play, you can have a completely different form of government. However, with all the positives, this game does have one down side, the game can quickly put strain on older computers, so make sure your computer meets or exceeds recommended system requirements. All in all, I highly recommend this game for any computer gamer. People who like history, or other games like Rise of Nations and Empire Earth will probably also like this game.

Pros:  Challenging and engaging

Cons:  System intensive This is a much more intensive version than Civ III. I recently upgraded my system and the game works great, even into the later stages. This game requires a lot of thought and is not easy, you have to understand your Civ's strengths and play to them. Being aggressive eary pays off later.

Pros:  Everything

Cons:  None Ive been playing this off and on for a few weeks now, and from what I can tell, theres nothing wrong with the game. Its fun to play, time consuming but fun, and plays through without a hitch. One thing I do want to mention is that I have yet to play the game online, so thats the only thing I havnt tested.

Pros:  Not many

Cons:  Too many bugs This game was released too early. It has graphics problems, crashes to the desktop, and renders computers to a slow crawl. Don't buy until 2K games produces a patch to fix this game. There are complaints all over the internet. I am a long time fan of civilization games and I am sorry I bought this one.

Pros:  None

Cons:  Doesn't work This game was a total waste of $50.00....... Tried to install on it on 3 different computers. All of the computers had specs exceeding what was recommended..... Only got paste installation on one of them.....

After started the game, I found that the map was screwed up. For some reason my units couldn't eliminate the 'fog of war'. The map was just black. After some searching, I figured out a way to correct this problem, but the game ran so slowly that I just gave up.

Curses on the people who released this game knowing how truly screwed up it is. I hope their private parts shrivel and fall off.

Go for Civ III instead.

Pros:  Nice music - Diplomatic screens.

Cons:  Everything else. When I first booted up CIV IV I was excited I was ready for something like Civilization III on steroids... But instead I got a horrible game that should have never been included as part of the CIV series of games.

1. Graphics are dumb looking, unlike Civ III where your characters - 'shared' the map well. --- In CIV IV they are all giants who look more like game pieces than 'civs'.

2. You don't actually 'feel' like the leader of a nation. Civ III and to a lesser extent ii (mostly because of flawed diplomacy options) made you feel like a 'leader' you would walk away from the game and think about how you could make your people thrive and their enemies pay. Not here. CIV IIII Makes you feel as if your playing a fancy version of a risk board game.

3. The only nice thing in CIV 4 is the nuclear weapons animations/effect - I always thought the nukes in CIV III were a tad weak.

Stay away from this, go for CIV III Conquests instead.

The Bottom Line on Civ4

Pros:  Potentially fun, great graphics

Cons:  too many to list. game went in wrong direction You have to ask yourself what happened at the programming table. While concept is essentially the same to play, so is easy to use, the game play really digressed. Civ3 was excellent, and Conquests wonderful - why go backwards? Game now major memory hog and AI imbalanced. Some major problems fixed from Civ3, but overall, release premature. Should have been scaled down and released as patch only, fixing Civ3 problems.

This is a game that needs tweaking, and needs to wait a bit until computers can catch up to its memory/graphic needs. Until then, it's just frustration, and coming from a major Civ addict as myself, it's really, really sad.

Pros:  nice idea, graphics

Cons:  AI cheating badly This is very frustrating game. Basicly everything seems to be ok and you enjoy game few first "tries" or hours.
Then you get frustrated with "popping up" hostile barbarians (you can only turn that feature OFF which makes game too easy) who are way too strong comparing to your own starting realm. Barbarians can pop up in ANY unexplored spot or even explored which is not seen in that moment by players forces. And they will pop up! It reminds me like early rpg computer games where monsters were randomly generated and made exploring bit annoying. It doesnt help at all, that barbaric states are strong, they start with good army and also they have best technique available! And also they are laser-guided toward YOUR cities, they will come, in huge numbers, in early stage of the game. AND then starts the other annoying things, which reminds you all the time that you are playing computer game. And specially SID`s game as it have been trademark of his CIV serie. Everything works against you and in very annoying cheating way. AI really sucks. I am sure, in easiest modes this can be beatable, but then game feels too easy, there seems not to be any balance in game, it is too easy or too hard.
BTW. I enjoyed earlier Civs, especially 3rd and also been playing this over year now, which tells more about my masochist side than anything else. :/
Last Civ I ever buy.

Pros:  Graphics

Cons:  Everything else Gameplay is boring, and battling is frustrating and infuriating. I've never seen a tank lose to a spearman except in this game. I've had infantry have a 90% advantage over riflemen, and go down on the first shot. I can't express how much of a waste of time this game was, to me, the people who programmed it, and the people who have tried to install it. All of the people at Firaxis should be ashamed of this game.
