Cons:
Minor problems I have had my Apple 40GB iPod since September, and it has been overall doing well. Anyone with more than a few GB's of music files should buy this- it's the ultimate music player for the average music buff.
I only have a few minor gripes. For one, I would like to see a feature that shuffles the songs in one playlist rather than on the entire player. I share the iPod with someone with different musical tastes than me, and when I want to shuffle my songs I find myself pushing the Skip button every other track. On iTunes, you can shuffle a single playlist,however. Also, once I let the battery completely drain on a long trip, and I had to reset the iPod to get it to work again.
Another note-try not to put the same song on more than a few playlists. When you have one song on say, five PL's, iPod actually saves that song onto its hard drive five times! When I first got my iPod, I already had iTunes set up with a whole bunch of playlists. I had approximately 4.5 GB of music on my PC. When I loaded the music onto iPod, it said that 17GB had been used already. I had to completely restore my iPod (wipe it clean), get rid of most of my PL's, and try again. That time, it actually used the right amount of space.
There are also a lot of features about iPod I really like. The ratings system, combined with the SmartPlayist feature, lets me create a playlist of the music I enjoy listening to most. The Click wheel was a shock when I opened the box, but now I wouldn't have an mp3 player without one. It is just the right shape, size, and texture to browse thousands of songs without tiring your hand or thumb. You wouldn't believe how naturally it fits in your palm. The backlight eats up battery life, but it automatically shuts off after 20 idle seconds if you tell it to, and it is so handy to have there.
There's not much else to say about this little piece of hardware. It's an mp3 player, plain, simple, and reliable.

Cons:
not super ridiculously small This will change your life. Get the 20gb if you don't have tons of music. I put 500 albums on my 40 gigger and it's just half full.
For sure the best mp3 player out there.

Cons:
no quick jump Before I review my 40gb gen4 iPod, I think it's important to provide some background... I bought my second iPod last week. The first one that I owned was a gen3, and at the time, I was using Windows ME. The store clerk told me that I could use this iPod with ME by downloading a patch online. I had nothing but problems, so I returned it (after major arguments with the store manager). I then purchased a Dell DJ 20gb gen1. When I got my DJ, I was extremely happy with it. I filled my DJ very quickly (I'm a mobile disc jockey with a large music collection). So, that brings me to current day...

I went looking for a new portable mp3 player and narrowed my choices to the new Dell DJ 30gb gen2, the Zen Touch 40gb and the iPod 40gb gen4. Although I've been relatively happy with my Dell DJ, I spent some time with my friends' iPods and Zen Touchs to explore other options. I realized that iPod is the way to go. Here's why...
--------------------------------------------------------A few Dell DJ / Zen Touch flaws...
(1) It seems that the Dell DJ and the Zen Touch use the same OS. I don't know if they've made any OS improvements from gen1 to gen2, but the gen1 version in my DJ constantly had to "re-build library" (this is a 3-5 minute process that took place upon startup where I couldn't do anything but wait). It was quite annoying.
--------------------------------------------------------(2) My Dell DJ and my friend's Zen Touch use MusicMatch with a USB 2.0 connection (the new MusicMatch v10 is great!). When we transfer music from our computers to our portable devices, it takes quite a bit of time - it took me almost 3 full days to transfer 20gb (not sure if it was the connection, software, device HD speed or a combination thereof?).
--------------------------------------------------------(3) I was never really ecstatic about the DJ/Touch interface. Of course they're both limited to the same OS, but both of them have controls in different areas and are rather clumsy compared to the iPod.
--------------------------------------------------------Why iPod?...
(1) Interface, interface, interface. The interface on the gen4 iPod is absolutely amazing and incredibly well thought out. I can easily make all simple changes (volume, play/pause, track forward/reverse, track shuttle) when the device is in my pocket with simple clicks. All controls are in the same area.
--------------------------------------------------------(2) Seemingly stable software. My iPod has been amazingly stable so far and none of my friends have had any troubles with their iPods to date.
--------------------------------------------------------(3) Transfer speed. I transferred 20gb from iTunes to my iPod using FireWire in under 2hrs!!!
--------------------------------------------------------(4) So far, my battery life is amazing at close to 12 hours (I've heard that this diminishes over time - I cannot comment on that yet).
--------------------------------------------------------(5) 40gb - I need the space. Dell DJ only offers up to 30gb.

Cons:
Kind of on the big side while working out. I highly recommend this. It is great for working out or listening to music you like at work. At work I just plug in the sound cable right into my I-Pod and can listen to the music through the speakers.
I have different type of music in different catagories. Example: work out music, Jimmy Buffett music, slow music, etc..
This is the best gift I have got in awhile.

Easily scratched screen and Apple's support options I have had my 40G iPod since 2003. Mine is so old they don't even show it on this site! I have the scroll wheel and 4 button iPod.
I am now on my third and this one has lasted the longest out of all of them. I had to get it replaced under warrenty twice because of product failure. To get this done you have to physically go into the GeniusBar and have them determine it's not useable and then send it in to Apple. They supply you with a refurbished iPod of the same generation on the spot.
I think the newer iPods have better Window's compatablilty, weight and options. I would definitly reccommend the 40gig for anyone with a decent sized music collection.
I have liked this product so far, but I wish I would have held out for the Cowan iAudio instead...

battery life, software, weight, the only thing i really like about this ipod.Is how much music it can hold. other than that it sucks. the battery only lasts like three hours. charging it lasts even longers than that. then using the stupid software. is such a drag. it's like taking freakin rocket science as a class.

CANNOT STAND JOGGING, AND YOU NEVER GET A NEW ONE IF YOUR iPOD NEEDS TO BE CHANGED I loved it until I started to run with it. It's been three times already that my ipod fails and cannot be restarted while i'm jogging. The representatives in the customer service tell me that I shouldn't place it on waist, but it fails even if I have it on my arm or hold it in my hand. Apparantly, the shocks from my steps interfere with the spinning of the hard drive and can cause the hard drive to freeze.
One more thing: if anything happens to your iPod, they will not give you a new one, only a refurbished - which obviously increases the chances of future troubles.

Cons:
Too bulky for running, getting songs onto it should be easier I use the iPod mostly for when I'm working out. It's great in the gym but when I try to run with it, it's not as good as say, an iPod shuffle.
However, the iPod is great for long trips, using while I'm at work and for listening in the car. Actually it's good at home too.
